Look up at the sky in Rwanda, and you might see something unusual. The results have been remarkable. Zipline's drones now make more than 500 deliveries per day across Rwanda, serving more than 12 million people. They can deliver blood, vaccines, and medicines to any hospital in the country within 30 minutes of receiving an order. For patients who need emergency blood transfusions โ€” particularly mothers experiencing dangerous bleeding during childbirth โ€” those 30 minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

The drones are small, autonomous aircraft with a wingspan of about two metres. They are launched from distribution centres using a catapult system, fly to the destination at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour, and drop their cargo using a small parachute before returning to base. The entire process โ€” from order to delivery โ€” is faster than calling a taxi in most cities.

Rwanda might seem like an unlikely place to lead a technology revolution. It is a small, landlocked country in East Africa with a population of about 14 million people. Rwanda pioneered medical drone delivery, but the technology is now spreading rapidly around the world โ€” and the applications go far beyond medicine.

In Ghana, drones deliver vaccines to remote villages, helping the country achieve some of the highest vaccination rates in West Africa. In the Philippines, drones are used to deliver food and supplies to communities cut off by typhoons and flooding. In Scotland, drones carry medical supplies between hospitals on remote islands.
