Every year, billions of animals across the planet make incredible journeys. Birds fly across entire continents. Whales swim from one end of the ocean to the other. Butterflies travel thousands of kilometres on wings thinner than paper. These journeys are called migrations, and they are some of the most amazing events in the natural world.
Animals migrate for different reasons, but the most common ones are food and weather. When winter comes and food becomes scarce, many animals travel to warmer places where food is easier to find. When the weather warms up again, they travel back. Some animals migrate to find a safe place to have babies, and others follow the rain to find fresh water and green grass.
The distances that some animals travel are almost unbelievable. The Arctic tern โ a small seabird โ makes the longest migration of any animal on Earth. Every year, it flies from the Arctic in the north to the Antarctic in the south, and then all the way back again. That is a round trip of about 70,000 kilometres โ nearly twice around the entire planet! Over its lifetime, an Arctic tern may fly the equivalent distance of three return trips to the Moon.
What makes migration even more astonishing is that many animals make these journeys without ever having done them before. Young birds fly thousands of kilometres to a place they have never been, following a route they have never seen. Baby sea turtles swim across oceans to feeding grounds their parents never showed them. Somehow, the information they need is already inside them โ programmed into their bodies by millions of years of evolution.

๐งญ How Do They Find Their Way?
One of the biggest mysteries about animal migration is navigation โ how do animals know which direction to travel, and how do they find the exact same places year after year? Scientists have been studying this question for decades, and the answers they have found are truly remarkable.
Many birds navigate using the Sun during the day and the stars at night. Experiments have shown that birds can use the position of the Sun in the sky to work out which direction is north, south, east, or west โ just like an explorer using a compass. At night, some birds recognise patterns of stars and use them as a map. Scientists discovered this by putting birds inside a planetarium and changing the star patterns โ the birds changed direction to match the new "sky."
Some animals, including pigeons, sea turtles, and salmon, can detect the Earth's magnetic field โ the invisible force that makes a compass needle point north. These animals have tiny amounts of a magnetic mineral called magnetite inside their bodies, which works like a built-in compass. This means they can feel which direction is north even on a cloudy night when they cannot see the Sun or stars.
Salmon use one of the most incredible navigation methods of all โ smell. After spending years swimming in the open ocean, salmon return to the exact river where they were born to lay their eggs. Scientists believe they find the right river by remembering its unique smell from when they were babies. Each river has a slightly different chemical signature, and the salmon can detect it from far out at sea.
Monarch butterflies migrate from Canada to a tiny area of forest in Mexico โ a journey of about 4,000 kilometres. The butterflies that make the return journey in spring are actually the grandchildren of the ones that flew south in autumn. They have never been to Mexico before, yet they find the same trees their grandparents used.

๐ Famous Migrations
Some animal migrations are so spectacular that they have become famous natural events, attracting tourists and scientists from around the world.
The Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa is one of the most dramatic. Every year, more than 1.5 million wildebeest, together with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, travel in a huge loop across the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya. They follow the rain, searching for fresh grass to eat. The most dangerous part of the journey is crossing the Mara River, where enormous Nile crocodiles wait in the water. Thousands of animals die during the crossing every year, but the herd keeps going.
Humpback whales make one of the longest migrations of any mammal. They spend the summer feeding in the cold waters near the North or South Pole, eating up to 1,400 kilograms of food per day. Then, as winter approaches, they travel thousands of kilometres to warm tropical waters near the equator, where they give birth to their calves. During this time in warm water, adult humpbacks barely eat at all โ they survive on the fat they stored during summer.
The Christmas Island red crab migration is one of the strangest. Every year, around 50 million tiny red crabs march from the forests in the centre of Christmas Island to the coast to lay their eggs in the ocean. There are so many crabs that they cover roads, gardens, and even buildings. The local government closes roads and builds special crab bridges to help them cross safely.
Even insects migrate in enormous numbers. Dragonflies migrate across the Indian Ocean โ a journey of 14,000 to 18,000 kilometres over several generations. Scientists only discovered this migration relatively recently, and it may be the longest insect migration in the world.

Animal migration is one of nature's most extraordinary achievements, but many migrations around the world are now in serious danger. Human activity is making it harder and harder for animals to complete the journeys that their species have been making for millions of years.
The biggest threat is habitat loss. When forests are cut down, wetlands are drained, or grasslands are turned into farms and cities, migrating animals lose the places they need to rest, feed, and breed along their routes. A bird that flies thousands of kilometres needs stopping points along the way โ places where it can eat and recover its energy. If those places disappear, the entire migration can collapse.
Climate change is also disrupting migration patterns. As temperatures rise, the seasons are shifting. Flowers bloom earlier, insects hatch at different times, and the food that migrating animals depend on may not be available when they arrive. In some places, the weather has changed so much that traditional migration routes no longer make sense โ but animals cannot easily change routes that have been programmed into them over thousands of generations.
Light pollution from cities confuses birds that navigate by the stars. Billions of birds die every year after crashing into brightly lit buildings during their night-time migrations. Fences and roads block the paths of land animals. Noise from ships disturbs whales that communicate using sound to navigate across oceans.
But there is hope. Conservation organisations around the world are working to protect migration routes. Some countries have created wildlife corridors โ strips of protected land that connect different habitats and allow animals to pass through safely. International agreements protect important stopover sites for migrating birds. And scientists are using satellite tracking to learn more about migration routes so they can be better protected.
Migration reminds us that animals do not live in one place โ they connect different parts of the world through their journeys. Protecting migration means thinking about the whole planet, not just one country or one habitat.
