Roll and Say

Roll a foam dice with pictures on each face — say the word that lands face up.

⏱ 10-15 min⚡ Low energyðŸ‘Ĩ Whole class

📋 What You Need

A large foam dice — stick printed vocabulary pictures on each of the six faces using tape or velcro so you can swap them out between lessons. A regular dice works too if you assign a word to each number.

ðŸŽŪ How to Play

1

Attach six vocabulary pictures to the faces of the foam dice.

2

Sit children in a circle on the floor.

3

Teacher rolls the dice into the middle of the circle.

4

All children shout the word shown on the top face together.

5

Pass the dice to a child — they roll it and the class shouts the word again.

6

Continue around the circle until every child has had a roll.

ðŸ’Ą Teacher Tips

→

Print pictures at a large size so children at the back of the circle can see clearly.

→

Encourage children to say the word loudly and clearly, not just mumble.

→

After rolling, ask one child to use the word in a sentence for a bonus challenge.

→

Velcro attachments make swapping pictures between topics quick and easy.

🔄 Variations

→

Action dice — each face shows an action word. Roll it and do the action.

→

Colour dice — six coloured faces. Roll and name the colour, then find something that colour.

→

Number dice — say the number and count out that many claps or jumps.

→

Slow reveal — roll the dice then slowly turn it to reveal the face for suspense.
