Team Spelling Relay

Teams race to spell a word on the board — one letter per student.

🛠 Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Space for teams to line up

📋 How to Play

  1. Divide class into teams of 4-6. Each team lines up at the back of the room.
  2. Teacher calls a vocabulary word.
  3. First child in each team runs to the board and writes the FIRST letter.
  4. They run back and tag the next child.
  5. Second child runs and writes the SECOND letter.
  6. Continue until the word is complete.
  7. First team to finish with the correct spelling wins a point.
  8. Play 10 rounds — highest score wins.

💡 Teacher Tips

✓Use words from the current lesson — this reinforces spelling naturally.
✓Allow teams a 10-second planning phase before running.
✓If a letter is wrong, the NEXT child can correct it on their turn.
✓Have a referee for each team if possible to check letters.

🔄 Variations

→Write the full word individually — race to be first with correct spelling.
→Sentence relay — each child writes one word of a sentence.
→Reverse relay — write the word BACKWARDS.
